Safaricom Plc’s mobile money platform, M-PESA, recorded a total transaction value of KES 20.2 trillion in the six months ended September 2025, up 5.0% from KES 19.2 trillion in the same period the previous year. The growth is attributed to increased automation of payments.
During the review period, M-PESA continued to be a key contributor to the firm’s revenue, driven by strong customer engagement and a diversified range of use cases. The fintech platform grew its revenue by 14.0% to KES 88.1 billion from KES 77.2 billion, accounting for 45.4% of the Group’s total service revenue.
M-PESA Segmental Performance
The consumer payments segment recorded the highest growth, rising 19.4% and contributing KES 35.7 billion in revenue to the M-PESA ecosystem, closely followed by business payments, which posted an 18.4% growth in revenue to KES 27 billion. Revenue from financial services and global payments rose by 13.9% and 17.3% to KES 4.6 billion and KES 2.2 billion, respectively. In contrast, revenue from withdrawals dropped slightly by 0.7% to KES 18.5 billion from KES 18.6 billion in HY2025.
Under the business payments segment, customer-to-business (C2B) remained the highest contributor to payments revenue. The total value of transactions under C2B increased by 7.3% to KES 3.6 trillion, while the total transaction volume rose by 7.2% to 3.5 billion. Lipa na M-PESA tills and transaction value grew by 8.4% to KES 1 trillion, highlighting increased merchant adoption and customer usage. Pochi la Biashara tills’ transaction value surged by 95.6% to KES 153.4 billion from KES 78 billion in HY2025, reflecting strong uptake of tailored, customer-focused solutions.
Fuliza, an overdraft service launched in 2019 under M-PESA, remained the largest lending revenue contributor. The mobile money overdraft facility disbursed KES 629.2 billion in HY2026 compared to KES 450 billion in HY2025, generating revenue of KES 2.6 billion. KCB M-PESA loan disbursements increased by 28.9% to KES 35.1 billion, while M-Shwari disbursements declined marginally by 0.8% to KES 48 billion. Growth across lending services underscores M-PESA’s role in supporting financial inclusion and access to short-term credit.
The M-PESA wealth management fund grew rapidly during the period, evidenced by a 784.6% surge in active customers to 1.15 million. Assets Under Management (AUM) for the wealth fund rose from KES 2.2 billion in HY2025 to KES 15.1 billion in HY2026 — a 167% increase. The wealth management business generated revenue of KES 100 million in HY2026 compared to KES 10 million in HY2025, becoming a key pillar of Safaricom’s expanding financial ecosystem.
M-PESA Global payments
M-PESA global remittances grew 11.5% to KES 296 billion, highlighting strengthened diaspora ties. Distinct customers increased to 1.3 million from 1.2 million, reflecting Safaricom’s efforts toward diaspora financial inclusion. The global mobile money service enables registered customers to send and receive money from countries across the world. The fintech’s global service partners with Western Union, MoneyGram, Ria, WorldRemit, Wave, and Remitly, among others, offering quality services tailored to customers’ needs.
M-PESA Visa Card active customers increased to 245,400 from 172,900, while transaction volume rose by 27.8% to 3.7 million from 2.9 million. Revenue grew by 50.1% to KES 240 million from KES 160 million in HY2025.
