NSE Market Report: Bourse on Bearish Momentum, Unga Group Rises 6.8%

Trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) on 9th January 2026 increased compared to the previous session with the number of shares traded increasing by 12.7% to 32,485,264 shares from 6,029 deals. Consequently, equity turnover rose by 49.3% to KES 893.29 million from KES 598.22 million in the previous session. Market capitalization inched down 0.1% to KES 3.027 trillion, from KES 3.031 trillion.

Out of the 56 listed stocks that participated in trading, 31 recorded gains, while 20 recorded losses. Manufacturing company Unga Group emerged the top gainer rising by 6.8% to close at KES 24.40. Eveready Plc ranked the second, gaining 6.2%, followed by BK Group which appreciated by 3.7%. TPS Eastern Africa and KenGen plc gained 3.7% and 3.4%, respectively.

Africa Mega Agricorp led the losers falling 9.9% to close the day KES 63.50. Other notable losers included Uchumi Supermarket (-4.9%), Standard Group (-4.9%), Limuru Tea (-4.3%), and EABL (-3.5%).

Telecommunications company, Safaricom Plc emerged the most traded counter with an aggregate turnover of KES 392.14 million. KCB Group, Equity Group, and I&M Group followed at distance, recording turnovers of KES 133.39 million, KES 111.11 million, and KES 50.52 million, respectively.

NSE Indices

The market was on a downward trend, with the Nairobi All Share Index (NASI) recording a modest downtick of 0.1%, settling at 191.87 points. Losses from large cap stocks including EABL (-3.5%), Co-operative Bank (-0.6%), NCBA Group (-0.6%) and Safaricom Plc (-0.2%) weighed on the market.

The NSE-10 and NSE-25 Share Indices declined by 0.5% and 0.3%, closing the  trading day at 2,022.61 points and 5,245.74 points respectively. The NSE-20 index closed at 3,233.75 points, up 0.4%, while the Banking Sector index rose marginally by 0.1% to 211.72 points.

Derivatives

The total volume of contracts traded increased to 213 from 201 recorded in the previous session, while the value of traded contracts decreased to KES 102,610 from KES 1.22 million in the previous session. The number of open interest contracts decreased by 2.2% to 8,783.
