Oil prices recorded a second consecutive decline on Wednesday following President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States would temporarily suspend its naval escort operations in the Strait of Hormuz, thereby bolstering market expectations for a potential peace deal with Iran. In turn, futures for the international benchmark, Brent crude, for July delivery fell by 0.59 percent to settle at USD 107.53 per barrel, while United States West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped 0.82 percent to USD 101.10 per barrel.

Oil Remains Above USD 100 Threshold

The oil price decline extended the previous session’s losses as markets reacted to Trump’s statement where he indicated that the United States would guide stranded commercial vessels safely out of the restricted waterways. While the president announced the temporary halt of “Project Freedom” which is a military escort initiative launched just one day earlier, the prospect of a definitive peace agreement remained elusive .

The Trump administration noted that approximately 23,000 seafarers representing vessels from 87 countries had been stranded in the Persian Gulf following Iran’s effective shutdown of the strait. Despite the positive signals regarding negotiations, analysts cautioned that peace talks have stalled as both sides refuse to move on their respective red lines, with Trump prioritizing a nuclear deal and Iran seeking to defer such discussions until after the opposing blockades on Gulf shipping are lifted . The absence of a concrete peace deal continued to provide support above the USD 100 per barrel threshold, even as diplomatic efforts progressed.
