Djibouti has officially unveiled Salaam City, its largest private residential development, valued at $480 million (KES 61.9 billion).
The city, which was launched by President Ismail Guelleh on March 23, 2026, in Nagad, will deliver over 7,000 homes alongside schools, health care facilities, mosques, commercial offices, recreational areas and retail spaces. The development is expected to be delivered in phases over five years, with the first residents anticipated from 2028.
The project is being financed by Salaam African Bank, which will provide Sharia-compliant financing services aimed at improving home ownership accessibility across different income segments. The development is also open to both local and international investors, including Djiboutian diaspora and institutional investors across East Africa and Beyond.
Salaam City’s Economic Impact
The project is set to spur significant economic activity. Salaam City is expected to employ nearly 2,000 people on-site during the peak construction periods across various sectors including engineering, construction, and technical services.
As Djibouti positions itself as a regional economic and logistics hub, the country has experienced rising demand for quality housing. The development of Salaam City is set to address this gap by offering affordable, middle-income and premium homes targeting families and professionals.
“Djibouti’s development should be measured not only by the scale of its ambitions, but by its ability to improve the daily lives of citizens. By expanding access to quality housing, generating employment opportunities, and building modern, inclusive communities, initiatives like Salaam City invest directly in the well-being of our people and the future of our nation,” said President Guelleh.
