Inflation rate as measured by the Consumer Price Index annually was 4.1% in July 2025, an increase from last month’s 3.8%, reflecting a 0.1% inflation rate on month-to-month basis. This 4.1% record marks a three-month high and reverses an initial period of price stability.
The inflation rate in July was primarily attributed by a surge in prices of commodities in the last 12 months. Between July 2024 and last month prices of products in the food and non-alcoholic beverages division, went up by 6.8 per cent while the transport index rose by 4.1 per cent. Additionally, the cost of housing, gas, water, electricity and other fuel charges expanded to hit 1.3 per cent. The named categories all together account for over 57% of the total weight across the 13 major expenditure categories. Meanwhile alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics recorded an inflation of 5.1% in July 2025.
Data from Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), shows the overall consumer price index from 139.94 in July 2024 to 145.74 in July this year.
Prices for everyday commodities notably increased in July with 1kilogram of maize flour going up by 1.6%, a kilogram of tomatoes and maize grain by 1.2%, a kilogram of kales by1.3%. however, foods like potatoes, cooking oil and milk had a price decrease of 2%, 0.6% and 0.2% respectively.
