U.S. retail giant Walmart intends to establish its presence in Africa by the end of 2025, with plans to open its first store in South Africa. The retailer already owns Massmart, a retail group in South Africa which operates chains like Game, Builders Warehouse, and Makro. With South Africa’s modern infrastructure, and an expanding customer base, the retail titan’s venture into the country represents a strategic move.

Walmart’s entry comes with a hurdle of stiff competition from dominating firms such as Pick n Pay, Woolworth, and market leader Shoprite. Online giants Amazon and Takealot.com are also set to pose competition to the retailer.

The South African Outlet will offer a variety of goods sourced from local producers including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel and technology products.

“Walmart will also offer a variety of locally sourced products. By partnering with South African Suppliers and Entrepreneurs, we aim to bring our signature every day low prices and global standards to the market while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” said Kathryn McLay.
