It’s almost the end of the closing period to file your returns for 2020, and KRA is here as the taxman, is mandated to assess, collect and account for all tax returns underwritten laws and specified by provisions of the written laws.
Therefore, every individual or company in Kenya possessing a KRA PIN must file their returns before the June 30th of every year.
Kenya Revenue Authority had earlier in the year notified all individuals or organizations possessing a PIN to file their tax return before 31 June 2021, marking the end of the 2020/2021 financial year. The regulatory has made it easier for individuals to file their tax returns through their ITAX portals.
How to file Income Tax Employment Income Only
Employment income means any salary, wages or fee, gratuity, other profit, or incidental benefit of any kind obtained by an employee if it is for money or money’s worth or “anything else that constitutes an emolument of the employment.
- Go to Itax; Open your browser, and go to https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/
- Enter your KRA PIN, click Continue. Enter Password and Security Stamp ( answer to arithmetic sum) and Click login
- Go to Returns Menu and select ITR For Employment Income Only
- Enter Return Period, select ‘Yes to the question ‘Do you have employment income?’ and Click ‘Next.’
- Under basic information, answer the questions asked appropriately and Click ‘Next.’
- Go to Section F, details of employment income and confirm the name and PIN of the employer, Gross Pay and other allowances as per your P9 form.
- Go to Sheet M, details of PAYE deducted, confirm Employer details, Taxable salary, chargeable pay, Tax payable on taxable salary, and PAYE deducted. Details can be modified as per your P9.
- Go to Section Q and capture a payment, if any, made before the filing of the return.
- Go to Section T, Tax Computation, Enter defined/pension contribution amount (per your P9 actual contribution by the employee) and personal relief. Then, click ‘Submit’ and download the E-return acknowledgement receipt.
How to File NIL tax returns on iTax
In a situation where the individual or the organisation does not make any income during the financial period, they are still required to file nil returns.
- Go to Itax; Open your browser, and go to https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/
- Enter your KRA PIN, click Continue. Enter Password and Security Stamp ( answer to arithmetic sum) and Click login
- Select the returns tab on the menu
- select file nil tax returns
- Select income tax-resident individual nil E-return fills in required details and downloads receipt.
