Safaricom Plc has appointed career banker, John Ngumi as its Board Chairman effective August 1, 2022.

John Ngumi will take over from founding Chief Executive Officer and current chairman of the telco Michael Joseph who is parting ways with the firm after more than two decades.

With a banking career spanning 35 years, Ngumi is among the region’s top investment bankers who has overseen major public and corporate finance transactions for state-owned enterprises, sovereigns, and financial service groups.

Besides being the inaugural chairman of the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA), Ngumi has also served as board chairman of Kenya Pipeline Company.

Other roles include the inaugural director on the board of the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) now the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

He is currently the Board Chair of the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC), a position he has served since August 7, 2020.

ICDC is tasked with the implementation of the Kenya Transport and Logistics Network which comprises Kenya Railways Corporation, Kenya Ports Authority, and Kenya Pipeline Company.

The telco has also announced the resignation of Sitholizwe Mdadlose with effect from August 1, 2022. Mdadlose has been holding the position of Managing Director at Safaricom.
